Question: Does The Bible Speak About Cavemen?
Answer: One question that often comes up concerns that of cavemen. Does the Bible have anything to say about these people?
1. Scripture Describes People Living In Caves
The Bible describes a number of people who actually made their dwelling place in a cave. In the Book of Genesis, we find that Lot lived in a cave after he fled Sodom.
Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains, for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave (Genesis 19:30 NIV)
Scripture also tells us that when David was running from Saul, he lived in a cave.
David left there and escaped to the cave of Adullam; when his brothers and all his father’s house heard of it, they went down there to him (1 Samuel 22:1 NRSV).
Obadiah hid a hundred prophets in a cave and fed them bread and water, to save them from Jezebel.
While Jezebel was killing off the LORD’s prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied them with food and water.) (1 Kings 18:4 NIV).
To escape the Midianites, the Israelites lived temporarily in caves. Elijah himself lived in a cave.
At that place he came to a cave, and spent the night there. Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” (1 Kings 19:9 NRSV)
Even Job mentions people who lived in caves.
But now I am mocked by those who are younger than I, by young men whose fathers are not worthy to run with my sheepdogs. A lot of good they are to me-- those worn-out wretches! They are gaunt with hunger and flee to the deserts and the wastelands, desolate and gloomy. They eat coarse leaves, and they burn the roots of shrubs for heat. They are driven from civilization, and people shout after them as if they were thieves. So now they live in frightening ravines and in caves and among the rocks (Job 30:1-6 NLT)
As far as the Bible is concerned, as people started to spread out and fill the earth they lived in a variety of places. This includes caves. Consequently, the idea that certain people made their homes in caves in not contrary to Scripture.
2. Early Humans Were Not Ignorant Savages
The Bible says that some of the earliest inhabitants of the earth lived in caves. Yet the Bible does not teach that early humanity was composed of ignorant brutes which lived exclusively in caves. Scripture knows nothing of pre-Adamic creatures which were half-human half-ape. In that sense, cavemen never existed.
According to the Bible, the first humans were highly advanced people. The Bible says that Cain, the first child of Adam and Eve, built a city. Then Cain’s wife became pregnant and gave birth to a son, and they named him Enoch. When Cain founded a city, he named it Enoch after his son (Genesis 4:17 NLT).
The very first human conceived was a builder; not a cave-dwelling brute. We also read the advances made by other early humans.
Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock. His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute. Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron (Genesis 4:20-22 NIV).
These descriptions do not indicate early humanity being unlearned cave-dwellers. To the contrary, the human race fell from an original perfect state.
Thus, instead of the humanity getting better and better throughout time, humanity is actually falling further from original perfection. This is completely contrary to the teaching of the theory of evolution. Therefore, the half-ape cavemen, as the theory of evolution portray them, never existed.
Summary To Question 33 Does The Bible Speak About Cavemen?
One of the scientific difficulties in Scripture concerns the existence of cavemen. Where do they fit with Scripture? The Bible, in fact, mentions a number of people who did live in caves. However, this is not the real issue. The real question is this: “Did some type of pre-human creatures live in caves?” The Bible is clear on this matter. Such people did not exist.
The Bible says that Adam, the first human, was created perfect by God Himself. However, he and his wife Eve fell from this original perfect state. Thus, his descendants would still have been of great intelligence even though they would have been affected by sin. Scripture informs us that the offspring of Adam were intelligent human beings. Among other things, they built entire cities and were advanced in areas of music.
Consequently, the biblical picture of the first human beings is not that of cave men which walked around with their knuckles dragging on the ground. According to the Word of God, there were no pre-human creatures which existed who were part ape and part human. The first humans were perfect; not ignorant savages.
